A project from 10 years ago during my film studies in Florence, Italy. It was the beginning of being always online. I find it fascinating as a photography and philosophy time capsule, a fledgling realization during a time when Facebook was for college kids and party photos.
Artist statement, Spring 2012
“The intention of this project is to show the difference between reality and digital fantasy. It is personal challenge for myself to find reality. I crave physical socialization and real conversation. We sit in our rooms on the computer socializing with people that aren’t physically with us. I believe this is a very real social problem in the modern world. We are afraid to live. We are so comfortable in our own digital world we are missing the physical world around us. We are forgetting how to speak, to love, to interact with each other.
Through the use of film photography, an actual physical art form I am exploring the real world. I am comparing the beauty of film to a digital Facebook page that represents the person. The black and white photograph is representative of the person I know or met, and the Facebook photograph is how they choose to be represented online.”
